What to wear for your headshot session?
Whatever it is that you are looking for: Corporate photography, professional headshots or portrait photography, at Hazel Studio we can provide you with high quality images that will take your brand to the next level. Now, you might ask yourself, “How exactly do I prepare for my headshot session?” well in order to answer that question, you must first consider, what type of headshot are you looking for. Here is a comprehensive guide to help you.
As a general rule of thumb, it is crucial to make sure that you take a shower, wash your hair and look clean before arriving at the session. The primary goal of any headshot, is to emphasize your face and eyes instead of the clothing, with an ultimate purpose of making you appear confident and approachable. As such, it is probably a good idea to avoid wearing distracting clothes that take away from your facial expression and overall body language. You might feel tempted to wear trendy clothes, but guess what? As time goes on, those trendy clothes will inevitably become old fashioned! Simply for this reason alone, try preparing a classic outfit instead. Clothes must be wrinkle-free and fitting is also an important factor; avoid wearing clothes that are too small or too big. In terms of colors, darker colors (especially royal blue) look really pleasing to the eye. Did you know that 85% of actors that wear blue in their portfolios get hired? Blue is a color that illuminates confidence, and will give your headshot an undertone of leadership, thereby boosting your brand’s presence.
Corporate headshots work really well when individuals wear dress shirts, blazers and long sleeves.
For men in the corporate field: Stick to collared clothes, traditional dress shirts (without any fancy designs, solid colors only) as well as a suit and tie, if you prefer.
For women in the corporate field: Gold, ruby, silver, diamonds and all those shiny things… Ah… Don’t we just love our stones? As beautiful and enamouring as these stones are, wearing too much jewellery will actually inhibit your headshot’s ability to effectively communicate your brand. We highly suggest to keep it simple and we’d like to recommend to our female clients that have booked a corporate headshot session, is to find a healthy balance when it comes to jewellery. Again, it just boils down to the principle of distraction that we want to avoid in your headshot, at all costs.
Firstly, we would like to whole-heartedly welcome our future Hollywood superstars here at Hazel Studio! We would love to work with you folks to enhance your portfolios. We know you all are super talented, and although you may want to wear your character outfits, we strongly suggest that you stick to regular clothes for your headshot sessions. One of the most admirable qualities an actor can possess (from the casting director’s perspective), is versatility. We want to make sure that when the casting directors receive your portfolios and have a look at your headshots, they can clearly see your look in a variety of different characters. Wearing classic regular clothes, will increase your chances of receiving call backs. Take our word for it!
Male Actors: Avoid crew-neck shirts because they can appear unflattering; solid colored shirts work best, and if you want to step out of the box, definitely bring with you a few additional options of clothing with special textures such as ribbing or chain stitching. Collared shirts can also work, but only if they match your overall personality. Consult with us for an unbiased opinion on your look!
Female Actresses: Avoid low-cut tops because it makes it difficult for us to crop the headshot close (we definitely want to emphasize your face, but show a portion of your outfit as well). Generally, we recommend you wear long-sleeves, because showing your bear arms might make it harder for directors to perceive your “neutral look”.
