FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I’ve tried to list off all of the common questions that I have been asked over the years of shooting professional headshots and portraits. But of course, if there is something not in my FAQ that you want to know please contact me. I’d be happy to answer your questions.

Will you direct me?

Yes. You are in very good hands. I have excellent tips and tricks to make you look and feel your utmost best. My direction is very precise and before we even take the first picture, I’ll be providing you some useful tips, so that you can feel prepared for the session. Also, I transfer all the images on my laptop live during the session, so we can review the images together to ensure that my guidance is actually helping you improve the quality of your shots.

What should I wear?

Clothes

  • Bring a few choices of clothing and solid colors look great in photos.
  • Make sure that ALL your clothes are ironed and pressed before the shoot. Wrinkles in clothes are difficult to remove in Photoshop.
  • Stay away from stripes, prints, or patterns because the camera has a difficult time dealing with prints and patterns, and it creates what is called a “moire pattern”. A moire pattern is a wavelike pattern that is nearly impossible to exclude during the retouch process.
  • The number one consideration is to wear clothes that fit you well. Not too tight, not too loose.

Glasses

  • If you wear glasses all the time, do wear them in your photograph but make sure the glasses have anti-glare coatings.

Do you offer consultations?

I sure do! If you want, we can meet at my studio or at a coffee shop a little closer to you. I also offer phone consultations if you’re from out of town. Our consultations are no obligation and it’s a great chance for you get to know me. If you’d like to book a consulting session, please call me at 647-787-6761.

Providing that your office has a suitable space for the setup of an on-location studio, then absolutely, YES. For on-location team sessions, there is an additional fee of $500 for travels, assistants, setting up, and taking down. Contact me so we can set this up.

Where do we take the photos?

I shoot out of my own portrait studio in Mississauga. My space is a professional studio, it has a fresh and contemporary feel. I know you’ll love it there. Hazel Studio is located at 145 Traders Blvd with convenient TTC and highway access.

  • Cheque *made out to Hazel Studio.
  • E-Transfer * sent to info@hazelstudio.ca.
  • Credit * there is an additional 4 percent charge on all credit card payments.

Do I need makeup and hair styling for the photoshoot?

Makeup for the session is highly recommended for all women. The makeup cost is $150 and it includes hair help as well.

The makeup is applied specifically for the lighting we use and we usually start naturally to give you a clean, simple look. We do touch ups and will add subtle changes to the makeup as the shoot progresses. If you’d like to start off a little heavier on the makeup we are happy to do that as well, just let us know.

Women’s hair:

Hairstyling for the session is highly recommended for all women. We ask that everyone come in with their hair ready, in the manner that you would like to present yourself.  We want the hair in your pictures to be as close as possible to the way you would look on a fantastic hair day. Of course, my makeup artist is there to make sure it’s shoot ready so we can discuss what your vision is, and make a game plan before starting the shoot.

If you need a major overhaul hair wise or you are naturally curly and want to switch to a straight style, there may be an extra $25 charge for our makeup artist to revamp it for you. Make sure you discuss this with us prior to your session, so we are all on the same page.

Men:

We don’t recommend makeup on men unless you have skin problems such as rosacea or eczema, I can provide a light touch up to even out the skin tone for $50.

Facial Hair:

If you’d like to shoot with facial hair we’d be happy for you to come in with whatever level of growth you have and can shave or trim it down once we’ve gotten it covered. Bring with you whatever grooming products you’ll need to get it done.

What happens if I'm late for the photoshoot?

Please arrive on time for your session. If you arrive 10-20 minutes after the session starts, you will have missed out a substantial part of the session and will not be accommodated for additional time without overtime fees. I have to be strict because I shoot multiple sessions on the same day, and they are back to back appointments.

What is retouching?

Retouching is a part of the production process that occurs after your headshot session is complete. I retouch each image by hand, in-house. It is a very time consuming process and can take up to 1 hour of detailed retouching. This process includes removing stray hairs, blemishes, evening out skin tones and textures, and softening under-eye dark circles. My goal is to keep your images very realistic and natural, I don’t want it to look artificial or fake. It’s important that the texture remains on your face for the image to look natural. If you require more extensive retouching that takes longer than my standard 1 hour retouching, there may be an additional retouching fee to cover my time and talent.

Will I feel weird doing this?

Yes… For the first 5-10 minutes maybe. Let’s face it, you don’t wake up every day to get your hair and makeup done and then proceed to get in front of a camera at a professional studio. So it can feel a bit weird, but I promise the feeling goes away in no time. Headshot/Portrait is all about letting go of personal hang-ups, and seeing yourself in a whole new light. Overcoming that weird feeling is the first step. By the end of the session you’ll want to do it all over again.

Do you offer group discounts?

Absolutely. Pricing will vary depending on factors such as: the size of the group, if you require in-studio or on-location service and other variables. Contact me to inquire about the Team Sessions, with a rough estimate about the size of your group and whether you’d prefer to come to my studio, or if you require an on-location photoshoot.

Can I get a discount on my headshot session if I refer a friend to you?

Absolutely! I love referrals! If you refer a friend who books me before your session, you’ll receive 10% off your headshot session. This applies to whatever package you choose! If you refer a friend who books me after your session, you can receive either one additional retouched image from your session or 10% off of your next headshot session.

Do I get a discount if I come back for another headshot or portrait session?

Absolutely! I am so honoured when clients come back for more!

  • 15% off return within 1-year
  • 10% off return after 1-year

What is the cancellation or no-show policy?

If you “cancel last minute” or do not show up to your scheduled headshot/portrait session, I charge a $100 in rescheduling fees. Please reach out to me at least 24 hours in advance to let me know you can’t make it and I can try to book you in for another appointment.
