How to prepare for your headshot session

Tips to obtaining the best headshot session.

Solid, vibrant, and middle tone colors.

The clothing should be simple; no stripes or patterns.

Dark long sleeves produce the best dramatic headshot.

Textures can work but no patterns. Do not wear stripes or any other patterns.

Make sure your clothes are ironed and pressed before the shoot. Wrinkles in clothes are difficult to Photoshop out.

For corporate/professional shots, bring a few dress shirts (white, light blue, yellow etc.) and a few ties, all freshly pressed.

Shave right before appointment, unless you are going for a scruffy look. Bring a razor and shaving cream in case you decide to go for the clean shaven look during the shoot.
in which case you should bring your own razor and shaving cream to shave part of the way through the session.

If you color your hair, make sure roots are not visible. It is extremely difficult and cost-prohibitive to correct.

Earrings, jewelleries, and uni-brows are not recommended.

Make-up usually not recommended for men. However, if you have skin problem such as rosacea, eczema, etc. It is highly recommended to get a light touch up to even out the skin tone.

For corporate/professional shots, bring solid color mid tone or dark pantsuit/skirt and a few long sleeve shirts (light color) that work under the jacket, all freshly pressed.

If you color your hair, make sure roots are not visible. It is extremely difficult and cost-prohibitive to correct.

Remove any unwanted facial hair.

If possible, remove any jewelry for your shoot; no necklaces, earrings, bracelets or watches. Remember, you want people to notice your face – not your jewelry. You are selling yourself, not your jewelry. However, if you must wear earrings, a simple and small studs are recommended.

Professional make-up and hair styling are highly recommended.

Women and men take a good look at your eyebrows. If you need to wax or pluck please do so before your shoot. Make sure your eyebrows are cleanly shaped, have a good line and accentuate your face. If you have sensitive skin sometimes waxing can leave marks so you may want to wax your brows a few days or a week before your shoot. It is much easier to have a clean palette to start with rather than to have to do extensive retouching after the fact.

If you wear glasses all the time, do wear them in photograph but make sure the glasses have anti-glare coatings.

*Solid vibrant, middle tone/true colors recommended. No patterns or logos.
*Short or long sleeve Tee shirts, Polo shirts, Denim shirts with a Tee under.
